Maya Angelou: Why is She So Important to Black British Writers?

Maya Angelou is a global legend. Her prolific writing, civil rights activism and impressive oratory skills continue to inspire generations of writers, including British writers of colour. From I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings to Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'fore I Diiie, Angelou has left an indelible mark on our literary heritage. Words of Colour Productions’ executive director Joy Francis will chair a celebratory panel discussion on Angelou’s influence on Black British writing and writers. Panellists include comedian, actor, writer and playwright Angie Le Mar, literary activist and academic Kadija George Sesay, award-winning civil rights laywer Marcia Willis Stewart and award-winning writer and performance poet Gabriel Akamo.
